The chat, which comprises 47 residents of the historic Florentine street, has devolved into open rebellion following Machiavelli’s decision to restrict posting privileges to administrators only. The move, intended to curb "superfluous chatter regarding stray felines," has instead galvanized a faction led by Dr. Stefano Rossi, a pediatric dentist, who has successfully launched a rival chat titled "Via dei Bardi (No Admins/Real)."
"It is much safer to be feared than loved, but one must avoid being muted," Machiavelli said in a statement issued via a PDF uploaded to the group's media tab on Sunday. "Dr. Rossi’s actions are not merely a violation of community standards; they represent a coordinated effort to destabilize the organic waste collection schedule."
The tension began in early July, when Machiavelli instituted a strict "Three-Strike Policy" for off-topic content. Under the new regime, residents who posted memes, holiday greetings, or queries regarding lost keys were placed on "Read-Only" status for 72 hours. Machiavelli defended the measure as necessary to maintain the "civic virtue and operational readiness" of the street's parking situation.
"The Prince of Florence would do well to remember that he does not own the recycling bins," said Francesca Moretti, a third-floor resident who was muted last week after sharing a recipe for zucchini flowers.
