CHICAGO — July 2, 2026 — Enterprise software provider VeloCorp has launched a mandatory "digestive synchronization" program at its corporate headquarters, requiring employees to pace their lunch consumption using network-enabled tabletop beacons.

The system, branded as ChewSync, features a small cylindrical light placed on every cafeteria table. Employees must wait for the device to transition from a pulsing amber to a solid green before taking another bite of their food. According to an internal memo, the initiative aims to combat "post-lunch metabolic slump" by enforcing a strict 30-second interval between swallows.

"We found that our mid-level engineers were rushing through their wraps in under six minutes," said Julianna Vance, VeloCorp’s Vice President of Human Optimization. "That creates an aerobic deficit and a massive insulin spike. By regulating bolus transit times, we are seeing a 14% increase in afternoon code commits."

The program is monitored via optical sensors built into the beacons, which track jaw movement. Employees who violate the pacing protocol receive an immediate haptic vibration on their company-issued smartbands. Three "rapid-mastication warnings" in a single fiscal quarter result in a mandatory 45-minute webinar on mindful chewing.

While management praises the program's efficiency, some staff members have reported logistical difficulties.

"It took me forty-five minutes to eat a turkey club yesterday," said senior database administrator Marcus Thorne, who received a warning for swallowing a cherry tomato during an amber light phase. "If you lose focus for a second and take a bite too early, the beacon chirps, and the entire table looks at you like you've committed a security breach."

VeloCorp plans to expand the initiative next month by introducing "liquid cadence tracking" for the office espresso machines, limiting employees to one sip of hot beverage every ninety seconds.
